TROMPE L’OEIL:
Trompe l’oeil, pronounced ‘trump loy.’ Literally, ‘fool the eye’
(sometimes presented as ‘trompe l’oeuille’ or incorrectly as ‘trompe d’oy’), a French term used to describe the use of photographically rendered art to create a scenario or attitude that is completely fabricated.
Whether a large focal creation such as a painted doorway or window opened to a different vista; a rendering of flora or fauna, and light and shade – to appear as real and consistent with its locale; or items appearing to be located on a surface that are not actually there – such as a false shadow, an architectural or dimensional element created in paint rather than constructed, or a flat surface painted to appear as three-dimensional.
The effect is intentionally playful and whimsical.
